We Protect the Native Species while Deterring the Invasive Ones

History and Origin

The Indian Myna was first introduced to Australia in the 1880s, to combat beetles and locusts in North East Queensland. While it was intended to rid the cane fields of problem pests, the Indian Myna thrived in the local environment and spread quickly. By the 1940s, the Indian Myna was found right along the East Coast of Australia.

They are recognised as a pest in Australia, causing damage to fruit crops and forcing native species out of their natural nesting areas. Indian Mynas (also known as Common Mynas or Indian Mynahs) host several diseases and parasites; they can transfer it to native birds or even humans. They are a very invasive bird, forcing native species out of the nesting areas. Over time, this leads to smaller breeding numbers in native birds.

Their aggressive nature, loud chirping and threat to native species lead to a need for control measures. Indian Mynas will chase birds out of their own nesting areas and destroy them, leaving native species with nowhere to lay their eggs.

Indian Myna Bird

Indian Myna birds are fast becoming one of the most annoying pests in Newcastle, Upper Hunter, Lower Hunter and the Central Coast region. These non-native species pose a threat to native birds, aggressively competing for nesting sites and food. Their fruit-eating habits threaten crops and pastures, contaminate products, cause expensive damage to the exterior of buildings, as well as transmitting diseases, fleas and mites.
